We’d already done a small grocery shop with the advance Dale had given us. It had come just in the nick of time since we were down to just beans and rice. But money didn’t go very far at the grocery store, especially when you were a family of six and needed everything. Including things like toilet paper. We’d loaded up on vegetables and dry goods and decided to worry about meat and dairy the next time around. There wasn’t much but it was enough to keep us from starving anyway.

It's not fair that dad gets left out all the time. I’ll see if we can bring something back for him, I thought. If everything goes well and there are leftovers, maybe I can ask to take some home.

Brunch was as amazing as it had been the first time.

Beverly met us at the front door again and ushered us inside. Walking through the quiet halls of the big house wasn’t as unnerving as it had been the first time, although it still wasn’t what you’d call a cozy type of home.

Please don’t let mom or our grandfather be there, I wished, feeling the tiniest bit guilty for not wanting to see mom.

Luck was with me though, because it was just Beverly and our grandmother again. We happily stuffed ourselves full of pancakes, hash browns and eggs until we were close to bursting.

“You don’t have to gulp it all down at once,” Beverly said, laughing, “it’s like you kids haven’t eaten in weeks.”
